                                                                                          March 2026

Dear colleagues, dear friends!

In this newsletter, you will find two articles whose authors urge us to recognise the signs of the times and adapt our educational practice accordingly. M. Michael Zech shows how we could approach cultural epochs and history quite differently in middle and upper school today if we set out to value cultural diversity and local characteristics, whilst at the same time acknowledging that we have, in many ways, become more and more globally interconnected.

Harald Jäckel observes that conflict and social incompatibility are also present in many Waldorf schools – and calls for us not to sweep these matters under the carpet, but to transform them courageously and creatively.

Two major events are just around the corner, which, together with partners, colleagues in the Pedagogical Section are preparing: The «World Early Childhood Conference» (April 8 - 12, 2026), has been fully booked for months and the presentations you will be able to follow via video. Then, a year later, the «World Teachers' Conference» (March 30 - April 3, 2027), the date of which you can already make a note of now.

Warm regards from the Pedagogical Section at the Goetheanum

Watch the World Conference via livestream

Goetheanum TV offers everyone who is unable to attend the «World Early Childhood Conference» the opportunity to follow the conference live via livestream. You can purchase individual presentations separately or buy them as a package for 41 Swiss francs/45 euros.

With the package, you can follow the opening, the lectures and the ceremony live. Afterwards, the Goetheanum TV team will upload the full-length livestreams to the website. The videos of the recorded puppet plays will be available from 13 November 2026.

The ceremony «100 Years of Steiner Waldorf Kindergartens Early Childhood» will be available to watch live and free of charge on Goetheanum TV for anyone interested. This event begins on Saturday, 11 April 2026, at 5.30 pm.
Developing a culture of conflict resolution

The growing social tensions are also evident in Steiner Waldorf schools in the increasing number and intensity of conflict situations. For many schools, this places a noticeable strain on day-to-day school life.

Yet this development also presents a strategic opportunity, writes Harald Jäckel, a former Waldorf teacher and now an organisational consultant, in his article.
History in Waldorf Schools

In this contribution, M. Michael Zech asks: How can an education that embraces diversity and the relationships between different forms of diversity be implemented in school teaching? In terms of a cultural history of humanity, this means moving away from a reductionist «master narrative» and thus also from the presentation of a sequence of advanced civilisations.
