Newsletter Special
October 2022

Dear colleagues in kindergartens and schools!

Today you are receiving a special newsletter, which contains important information about the upcoming World Teachers' Conference 2023.
For the
first time in six years, after the centenary celebrations in 2019 and the pandemic years, we will meet again for a major conference at the Goetheanum. We want to work on the theme:

«Affirming – Nurturing –Trusting, an Education for Today and Tomorrow»

and would like to ask that could display the attached poster in your place of learning, and specifically, one in the staff room. It can be printed A3 or A4 size.

A lot has happened since we last came together and the world is facing great challenges. Everyday life as well as travelling has become quite expensive, so it is becoming even more difficult than in previous years to raise the costs to enable participation in the conference. The Pedagogical Section will help as much as it can, as and when funds are available.

There are now over one thousand schools worldwide and many more kindergartens. If each school and each kindergarten could fully finance a conference ticket for one member of staff, the financial means that we have would be sufficient for travel support and other expenses. It would be great if you could tell the parents in your institution about your plan to attend the conference. Perhaps a parent here or there can be found to give away air miles or make a small gift to the conference budget.

If national associations could also offer support, where the school alone cannot afford the costs for their teachers to attend the conference, this would help a lot. Together we can fund the conference and, if possible, it would be wonderful if at least one person from many different institutions would attend.

For travel subsidies and reduced ticket prices, please find the forms here.

The conference programme has been finalised so that the technical implementation for registration can begin. You can register for the conference from 1 November and choose a workshop.

We look forward to seeing colleagues from all the countries where there are Waldorf and Steiner schools and kindergartens. For those who would like to prepare themselves for the subject matter, either in a group or on their own, we have enclosed two articles. Further suggestions can be found on the website of the Pedagogical Section.

Giving hope to every child and young person through empowering education in today's world is our aim and our hope for the 11th World Teachers' Conference!

With best regards and all good wishes for your daily work!

Your Pedagogical Section

Inspirations for the conference by Constanza Kaliks

We are very much looking forward to next year’s eleventh World Teachers Conference at the Goetheanum.
Under the heading of «Affirming – Nurturing – Trusting, an Education for Today and Tomorrow» we will explore central pedagogical questions that confront us today. Much in the biographies of children and young people, even in the social world at large, will depend on the answers we find to these questions.

Affirming children in their uniqueness, in their coming into the world, creating an environment that supports their development, an atmosphere of becoming that trusts in their future forces and intentions – these are the tasks we are facing every day.

The fact of the child’s or young person’s dependence places great responsibility on their entire social environment. They need our devotion – their bodily and mental situation is an unspoken plea to the adult world. Rudolf Steiner spoke of this plea at the beginning of his 1919 course for teachers, saying that it was the task of education to bring together the spirit-soul with the bodily organism «into a harmonious whole».

How can we meet this unspoken plea given the real situations, challenges and dangers so many children and young people are exposed to in their environment?

More thoughts from Robert Thomas

«At present the magnificent uniqueness of the earth in the cosmos and the ethical potential of the human individuality form the greatest challenge for our cultural, societal and scientific world. The earth and humankind are vulnerable, closely connected with one another and in need of protection. In the present time the spirit of the earth and the human spirit are in a face-to-face encounter without any protective membrane.

In the context of this development modern schools must think over the task of education; the same goes for Waldorf and Steiner schools world-wide.

Very early on Rudolf Steiner draws attention to the central task of our time in his account, published under the title Education of the Child: the issue is to develop a pedagogical method which is able to foster the growing child in a holistic way in the midst of society and nature.»
