Newsletter July 2020
Shaping reality in times of uncertainty

Dear friends of the Youth Section Worldwide,

For some, the exceptional situations that we are living through in 2020 seem to slowly normalise. For others – perhaps most of us – it is clear that “normal” is a term that awaits our redefinition in times of uncertainty. So how to live in a reality where the comfortable, the familiar and the expected is no longer guaranteed?

In our (Re)Search in times of COVID-19, we have been exploring what is required of us to shape the future in a conscientious way. How can we transform our life into a dance, moving between action and response, that is in accordance to the fulfilment of one’s own destiny and the needs of the world?

It seemed to us that the only way to start this path was to ground our actions in a deeper knowledge of ourselves. But, where to start?

Our summer will be for us a time of deepening knowledge and shaping the future. In this newsletter you will be able to read the questions that we are working with, as well as some reflections that have already sprung from this process. You will also see glimpses of how we, and other young people around the world are doing so, always in a participatory way. This means, that you are all invited to connect with us to help us give form to what is to come.

We wish you a wonder-full month, whether you are in Summer or Winter!

COMING UP IN 2021:

We are launching a (Re)Search Summer School!

19 - 25th July 2021
at the Goetheanum
Together with Nathaniel Williams (Free Columbia) and Joaquin Muñoz (Augsburg University) we will bring to young people interested in research processes, a week-long experience to learn about methodologies & practices of investigation grounded on Anthroposophy.

Who is it for?

The school is open for young people of all backgrounds, regardless of previous academic experience. It is recommended for the curious, interested spirit who seeks answers to their questions and want to find approaches that will lead them to unveil new mysteries as they emerge in their research.
Themes & content

New perspectives in research: from academic life to living with our questions.

T
he ethics of method and the moral aspect of research: what values lie within the methods we use?

R
elationship in peer-based research: researching to understand self & world.

D
eveloping Love, Devotion & Generosity in qualitative research.

I
ndigenous epistemologies and methods of research.

Anthroposophy, spiritual science & Goetheanism: Rudolf Steiner’s legacy.

In our (Re)Search in Times of COVID-19 process we are currently working with these questions:

WHAT MAKES A HUMAN BEING HUMAN?

&

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE?

We invite you to share with us your answers to this question, and if you want to participate on the next call via Zoom, write to andrea@youthsection.org

(Re)flections from (Re)Search in times of COVID-19
by various participants & a researcher
...Maybe I long for the world feeling like home again, is that why I look for potholes and cracks around me? So I can fix them? So I can own them, so they feel mine, so they feel like my place, my home (not in the sense of ownership but more on the sense of responsibility)?...

We are the generation who can really see the picture from a wider angle, and we can simply see nowadays with every new event that this tree is going to collapse no matter how we are improving with science and technology. It is already late to start, but it is a must anyways. Observers need to start contributing. The goal is to initiate the mentality of building the good instead of wasting the energy on fighting the bad. If I would give a gift, it would be awareness to the observers...

As I make the transcription of the call held in June, it appears like a puzzle to me. A puzzle created by many young people from different countries around the world, with different perspectives and backgrounds, of different ages and environments...
A contribution to art, Corona and the future (DEU)
by students of the Freien Waldorfschule Landsberg and their teacher Jessica Sartor-d'Avigdor

FROM OUR FRIENDS AND NETWORK

A survey for young people about our relationship to the branches of the Anthroposophical Society
from Milena Kowarik
Question to young people born after 1980 involved in different fields of work, and all those who do not attend a branch:

What needs do you have in an anthroposophical working group? A questionnaire has been developed to listen to your opinion and it can be completed until 30th September 2020. Answers will be evaluated before the AGM in October.

The request comes on behalf of a group consisting of members of the Executive Council at the Goetheanum and various branch representatives from the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The group met during the Corona time via Zoom, to discuss how the life of the branch and group work can continue.

It's going to happen! In the midst of the difficult times the world is currently going through, we have decided that the World Conference in the Goetheanum to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Anthroposophic Medicine, will take place! We would like to warmly invite you all to our Conference Crossing Bridges - Being Human!

More than 3 years ago, we, that is a lively preparation group of young people working in the various medical and therapeutic professions, met for the first time to organize an international interdisciplinary medical conference specifically for young people. Later, we were invited by the Medical Section to combine this with the 100th anniversary and the annual medical conference. But it all started for the youth and we haven't forgotten that. That's why we would very much want to celebrate this anniversary with you, our friends!

Living In Between Spaces

The World Social Initiative Forum (WSIF) will host their first webinar series Living In Between Spaceson July 31, 2020, Friday at 16:00 CET via Facebook Live. The online Forum aims to discuss the social questions arising out of COVID-19, George Floyds death, the climate crisis, and the oppression of democracy experienced worldwide.

WSIF Project Leader Joan Sleigh and SEKEM CEO Helmy Abouleish will start the series on the social challenges of today and what we can do now. The 7-part webinar series will culminate with the International WSIF Forum in July 2021 at the Goetheanum.

WSIF is a worldwide network that creates spaces for unfolding individual potential freely, out of Anthroposophy and in dialogue with other frameworks, in service of others and the world. Founded in 2000 by Ute Craemer and Truus Geraets, it is a project led by Joan Sleigh under the Section for Social Sciences at the Goetheanum.

— partnership between generations for fairness and sustainability

The solutions we find in the world post-COVID must involve children and young people. That is why the Learning for Well-being Foundation started the ACT2gether initiative: to gather, inspire and equip children and adults with the ability to work in partnership in creating well-being in their communities, and together realize their own unique potential throughout their lives.
We have just completed a four-months long online campaign to promote ACT2gether. We are now looking back and asking ourselves: How can we shape this initiative together with young people? How can ACT2gether support their own will to improve the world? —That is where YOU come in!
We are organizing an informal call with young people like you to tell us:
  • What are the issues that YOU care about that need partnership between generations to solve?
  • What would motivate YOU to join ACT2gether?
  • How could ACT2gether support you?

If you are interested in talking and engaging with us, please register your interest on the google form below and then we will contact you with the date and time for a 90min call in the first week of September. If you are interested, but cannot make the call, please still register your interest on the google form! There is no commitment to continue working with us after this call. If ACT2gether speaks to you and you want to get involved, you will be warmly welcomed to the wider ACT2gether family!
